my new TD95D needs help please.

I bought my TD95D new back in August of 07. For the first 150 hours on it things were great then I had some bad running problems pop up suddenly. All I did was come back to the house to fill up with fuel when the tank got down to 1/4 then I barely made it back out to the field to continue baling my hay. The fuel I used is off road fuel and the same batch that was in it before.

The engine started losing power and smoking white on me and acting like it was running out of fuel.

I made it back to my house and found the fuel system was full of air so I bled it and things seemed fine so I tried to go back to work but it didn't even make it out to the field again. It just died on me.

Both fuel filters were replaced at my 50 hour service and I drain a little off of them every time fill up with fuel. I've never allowed any water or anything to collect in them. This time though nothing would drain out of the filter. In the sedimenter I found thick jelly like stuff plugging it so I went to the dealer and got two new filters and changed them. It didn't help. I still could not keep the tractor running more than 10 minutes before it would start dying on me again.

For almost the last 100 hours of use I have been plagued with this problem. I work out in the field 10 or 15 minutes and then the engine starts running rough. Usually I can shut it off then bleed the system and it's fine for another 15 minutes. The sedimenter is the one that is usually full of air I have bee noticing. Mechanics from my local dealer have been out twice now and even taken it into the shop where they sent the injection pump off to be rebuilt. It's still doing it! Can you please help.

This morning I was out cutting hay. It's been about 4 days now since I got it back from the shop and the pump was rebuilt. It ran fine for almost an hour and then as the outside temps got up near 90 it started running worse and worse then got to where it was missing so bad I couldn't work any longer.

We have completely cleaned the whole fuel system twice now. We've blown out all the fuel hoses, checked and tightened all the clamps, cleaned the strainer in the pump and even found a few too tight zip ties on the return line which I took off. Nothing is working. When it's hot outside it will only run 15 minutes or so and then tries to die.

Please help. I can't afford any more down time from this tractor. It's the only one I have and it has to work or I don't make any money on our farm.

I am about to go into town and try buying another fuel filter for it. From your website I understand that a fleetguard FF5135 crosses to the NH filter that is on it. I'm sure I can find one of those locally. The local dealer is closed for the weekend but I have hay to finish with and can't wait on them.

The filters listed on the new holland website are 47135706 and 1930581 for the sedimenter. That is what my dealer sold me last time and what's installed on it. I saw different part numbers listed on your site for the tier 2 engine though.

Is it possible they gave me the wrong filters? My tractor was built in 04/07 if that helps any. I've been a diesel mechanic all my life and just can't figure this one out. Neither can anyone else. I'm stumped so please excuse any stupid questions I might ask.

On the fuel filter on it there are two gaskets. The big one around the filter and the small one around the threaded part that screws into the filter. The sedimenter on my tractor only has one. The big gasket? Are there supposed to be two on that one also? Like I said, I'm asking dumb questions trying to figure this out.

I should add that the first time it messed up on me the outside temp was 105 degrees F. I've never known diesel to gell anywhere near that before so I can't explain the fuel filter. My transfer tank was clean as can be and I have a water block filter on my pump that gets changed very often. I've also always used power service fuel additive in it.

Well, yesterday I replaced the fuel filter again just for the heck of it. I alco replaced both fuel hoses on the suction side of the pump. It didn't help. It was pretty cool outside and it went about an hour before the engine started carrying on. When it did it this time I got out and pinched the suction hose gong back to the tank for a second and it almost died but then right away came back to life and ran fine. That's got me thinking pump now. Maybe a small pinhole in the diaphram. I've sure never seen a pump work fine for a while then not work though. I did notice ast night that the scres holding the two halves of the pump together were really loose and I tightened them but that didn't cure it either.

     DAN,

SORRY I DID NOT GET TO YOU BEFORE THIS.

WHAT I THINK YOU HAVE IS A BACTERIA OR FUNGI IN YOUR FUEL SUPPLY OR YOUR FUEL TANK ON THE TRACTOR. WHEN THIS

HAPPENS A JELL OR SLIME WILL CLOG YOUR FILTERS AND IS MOSTLY DARK OR BLACK IN COLOR. YOU CAN BUY A FUEL

ADDITIVE TO PUT IN YOUR FUEL SUPPLY OR YOUR TRACTOR TANK. THE INFO IN YOUR LETTER I SEE THE OUTSIDE TEMP

IS HIGH. AT THIS DEALERSHIP, WE HAVE SEEN THIS BEFORE AND THE TRACTORS WITH PLASTIC FUEL TANKS WILL INCREASE

THIS PROBLEM IN HIGH TEMP AREAS. ONE THING THAT WILL HELP IS TO KEEP YOUR FUEL TANKS FULL. WHEN DONE WORKING

YOUR TRACTOR, FILL THE FUEL TANK. IF YOU DO USE AN ADDITIVE TO STOP THIS PROBLEM, GO A LITTLE HEAVY WITH

THE FIRST DOSE AND CHANGE YOUR FUEL FILTERS MORE OFTEN TILL ANY DARK  MATERIAL IS NOT FOUND.

PLEASE STAY IN TOUCH AND LET ME KNOW IF THIS SOLUTION HELPS.

    THANKS, LES.

Re: my new TD95D needs help please.

Thanks for the reply Les and don't worry about how long it took. It was a holiday weekend.

I have thoroughly cleaned the fuel system though.  I dropped the tank, cleaned every corner of it, blew out all the hoses and even cleaned the strainer in the mechanical pump. I only dound that stuff in the filters when it first started acting up. They have been changed twice since then too. I haven't noticed any more contaminents in the system since that time. My dealer here is still leading me to believe there is contaminated fuel also but it just can't be. I've been through almost 200 gallons since this started and bought fuel from different sources each time and even used different tanks to carry it home in.

Last night I was out baling my alfalfa and it right away started smoking and cutting out on me. I'm definitly not over powering it with the baler. It does it with the pto engaged or disengaged. Plus the baler only requires 35 HP. One mechanic suggested I might be trying to work it too hard is why I mention this. It's got 90 HP I believe at the PTO.

This morning I went to the very last thing in the fuel system that hasn't been checked or messed with yet by myself or my dealer. The mecanical lift pump. I looked at the diaphram for pin holes or tears, checked it carefully for cracks and cleaned it thouroughly. No luck. Engine was cold and it only ran about 10 minutes before bogging down again just sitting there running in the driveway.

So, in short, Tank has been cleaned, suction side fuel hoses replaced, clamps replaced, all pinch points and zip ties removed from fuel lines, filters changed several times, injection pump rebuilt by dealer, I checked the mechanical pump, checked every Oring, seal washer and banjo fitting on the system. No luck yet finding the problem.

Fuel is clear and bright in it, filters have less than 6 hours on them right now and are clean.

I'm getting ready to call top service again and see what help they can offer. I've been dealing with this problem for a couple months now and my warranty goes out in about 2 more weeks. I sure hope I don't get stuck with it.

I almost forgot, I think I have eliminated any internal engine condition being the culprit. When it starts trying to die, I can pinch the fuel line between the sedimenter and the tank for a couple seconds. The engine will almost die and then come back to life and run just fine for a few minutes. That can't be a bad injector either. It would run for sure with one bad one. two would kill it but it doesn't feel like an injector. None of them are making any strange noises either.

In fact the only strange noise I can detect is the solenoid on the inboard side of the injection pump. I'm not sure what it is for, it's not the shutoff solenoid, it's connected via linkage to a shaft on the front end of the pump. I never see it move at all and it feels like it's buzzing pretty hard. The mechanic at he dealer here said that was the pump buzzing but every time I look at it I wonder about that solenoid. What is it for and what is it supposed to do?

Do you all have any ideas at all what could be going on with my tractor? It's in the shop again now. After they replaced the lift pump and a few other things the last time they ran it in the shop and said everythign was fine then brought it back to me. It ran 5 minutes once it got here.

I am thinking shaking has something to do with setting it off. They ran it in the shop just sitting there. I started driving across my field getting ready to mow and the engine went to smoking and stalling again. Like running out of fuel.

    I'm so frustrated!

Re: my new TD95D needs help please.

Yeah it's working fine now. Sorry it took me so long to respond. My feelings are that the fuel pump fixed it. The dealer here threw so many parts at it over a three month period it's hard to tell but I'm pretty sure it was the pump. The only reason I hesitate confirming that is that when they gave it back to me after replacing it they had stripped the bleed screw on my filter housing. It was definitly sucking air then but it did stay running at least. Running poorly but running. That was better than before. This dealer here broke a lot of things on my tractor and I once again took it back with a list of things that they broke and asked for it all to be fixed. They did but then tried to submit parts they broke for warranty payment instead of taking it out of their own pocket like any other shop in the country would have. Since that got denied they sent me the bill so I'm taking action on that now. I'm not paying for things that an incompetent mechanic broke while working on my tractor under warranty or for parts they threw at it while guessing at the problem. They blame the problem on dirt and bugs in my tank but I can't have faith in what they say. By the mechanics own admission he cleaned the tank once before and it still had the problem. I also cleaned the tank myself. Plus I have a filter on my transfer tank and NEVER leave the cap off. If there was trash in my tank it came from their shop where it spent about half the summer.

A short list of the things they broke is as follows:

1 missing nut and one stripped out bolt on my injector pump. The bolt is still stripped and my timing is off a little.

Broken AC bracket from when they removed the injector pump.

Stripped bleeder screw on primary filter housing

Left loose hydraulic fitting on valve on back of tractor

Replacement AC adjuster bracket was also broken when given back to me due to over tightening. Still broken.

Lastly, my faith in my local dealer is broken. Forever! Since I got my tractor back the manager and the salesman which I did have a good relationship with are working elsewhere but even if they were still there I'd never buy from them again. I'm staying with Messicks from now on. I just ordered parts for my windrower from you all. Another thing I bought from the dealer here that was worked on by incompetent mechanics. I have everything working on it now too.

I only wish every dealer out there were as reputable and as helpfull as you all. Even from 2000 miles away you did more to help figure out the problem with my tractor than my local dealer ever did. You earned a customer for life down here in Texas!
